Depicting the nail-pierced hand of Jesus, spasmed with pain as it is firmly afixed to the cross, I Have Inscribed You on the Palms of My Hands is a stunning 18" X 22" charcoal drawing.  The Bible text of Isaiah 49:15-16 ("Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands, … I will not forget you.") is lightly penciled across the bottom.

This drawing speaks of the depth of God's love for His people.  If He would inscribe us on His palms in such a terrible way, certainly He will not forget us.

The depth of God's love for His people

When God spoke the words, "I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands, … I will not forget you" through the prophet Isaiah, I really have no idea what image the prophet may have had.  Whether or not there was some sort of cultural practice (like the piercing of the ear lobe of a slave who chose to remain with his master, although his time of service was elapsed — Exodus 21:5-6), I can't say.  But, one day, as I was listening to a song by Lamb based on this passage, the image of the Crucifixion — and Jesus' hands inscribed, as it were, with nails — came crashing in on me.  What better proof is there that God would never — certainly, could never — forget His people?

But, however loving and gracious the Lord may be, He is also a righteous, just and holy God.  He is also a jealous God (Exodus 20:5).  And, if He paid such a price to redeem us from the penalty and power of sin, I can't even imagine the wrath He will pour out on those who reject Him.  And, while John, the apostle, tells us that "God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son [to die on the Cross, to pay the penalty of our sin], that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. … [and] he who believes in the Son has eternal life", he also said, "but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him" (John 3:16, 36).

"It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God" (Hebrews 10:31).

I Have Inscribed You on the Palm of My Hands poster details

I Have Inscribed You on the Palms of My Hands is a poster-sized, limited-run art reproduction from the original charcoal drawing by the award-winning Christian artist, Tom Anson.  (It was a very small award.)  Printed on heavy paper, this quality reproduction measures approximately 14.75" X 11" (image size of 13.5" X 9.75").  It mattes nicely for framing at 16" X 20".

When this drawing was first displayed at an art show in 1990, the impact was unmistakable.  One man seemed almost transfixed by it.  Spotting it from across the way, he almost stumbled his way over the 100 feet to my booth, and stood gazing at it for almost half an hour.  Although this reproduction loses some of the power of the original (largely due to it's smaller format), it is still a solid accent to any room.

You may contact the artist for the availability of the original drawing, as well as reproductions in larger formats or note cards.
