Depicting a shepherd, carrying a lamb across his shoulders, The Good Shepherd is an 11" X 14" pen & ink drawing, accented with calligraphy of the Bible texts of Ezekiel 34:22 and 37:24 ("I will deliver My flock; … and they will all have one shepherd; and they will walk in My ways") and John 10:11 ("I am the good Shepherd").
Combining the words of the prophet with those of the Lord, Jesus, The Good Shepherd presents the awesome truth that, for those who are in Christ, there is truly a deliverance from "the old man" (cf. Romans 6:6); and if we walk after the Shepherd and listen to His voice, we can live dynamically in God's ways.
The nature of God's new covenant with man
Throughout time, mankind has been plagued with sin. When God gave man the Law as a constraint to sin (Galatians 3:23), it was to result in life; however, it only served to awaken sin in man, and proved instead to result in death (Romans 7:10). Obviously, something different was needed.
Speaking of what He was going to do, God promised through the prophet Jeremiah (quoted in Hebrews 8:8-12):
Behold, days are coming, says the Lord,
When I will effect a new covenant
With the house of Israel and with the house of Judah;
Not like the covenant which I made with their fathers
On the day when I took them by the hand
To lead them out of the land of Egypt; …
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
After those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their minds,
And I will write them upon their hearts.
And I will be their God, And they shall be My people.
And they shall not teach everyone his fellow citizen,
And everyone his brother, saying, "Know the LORD",
For all shall know Me,
From the least to the greatest of them.
For I will be merciful to their iniquities,
And I will remember their sins no more.
And elsewhere, He said (Ezekiel 11:19-20):
And I shall give them one heart, and shall put a new spirit within them.
And I shall take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,
that they may walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances, and do them.
Then they will be My people, and I shall be their God.
This promise was fulfilled with the coming of Jesus Christ, who died, was buried and rose again for our salvation. As we were grafted into His death, burial and resurrection, our old man was crucified with Christ, that our body of sin might be done away with. As a result, we should no longer be slaves to sin (Romans 6:5-6). And, as Jesus was raised from the dead, so we too might walk in newness of life (Romans 6:4).
This newness of life is found in walking according to the Spirit, set free in Christ from the law of sin and death, by the law of the Spirit of life (Romans 8:2).
By His death on the Cross, Jesus delivered His flock (Ezekiel 34:22); and, in the Good Shepherd (John 10:11), we have our one shepherd; and walk in My ways (Ezekiel 37:24).
